Global Student Satisfaction Awards 2019
Chalmers University of Technology receives the award for Overall Student Satisfaction

Eindhoven, 12th of June 2019 – Studyportals, in collaboration with IELTS, Shorelight Education, and US News Global Education, has launched the first-ever Global Student Satisfaction Awards at the NAFSA 2019 conference in Washington DC. Entirely based on student reviews, the awards recognise the best educators globally and are the first of their kind to review universities based solely on student voices and experiences.

The awards, which are based on the newest study experiences of the total 195,000 collected throughout the years, encouraged students to rate different aspects of their study experiences, from the admission process to career options. More than 45,000 domestic and international students contributed to the 2019 edition, representing over 209 nationalities and reviewing higher education institutions in over 151 countries, resulting in 631 universities receiving various types of recognition.

Edwin van Rest, CEO and founder of Studyportals remarked:

‘What we wanted to achieve with the Global Student Satisfaction Awards was to create an instrument not only to improve the quality of study choice, but to improve the quality of education itself, based on the most important voice – the voice of the students universities serve.’

The winners and the results of the global student satisfaction survey were announced on the 29th of May during a gala ceremony at the United States Institute of Peace within the week of NAFSA – the largest international industry conference in higher education. The event was attended by 200 international education professionals. Dr. Liesbet Steer, Director of The Education Commission, delivered an inspiring keynote speech, emphasising the difference education can make in a student’s life.

During the ceremony, among the 18 nominated institutions, six universities were awarded for outstanding achievements in student satisfaction:

  • Overall satisfaction: Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden
  • Quality of student life: Kühne Logistics University, Germany
  • Admission process: University of Tartu, Estonia
  • Student diversity: The University of Auckland, New Zealand
  • Student-teacher interaction: University of Cambridge, United Kingdom
  • Career development: Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico

The awards were accompanied by a report evaluating the state of student satisfaction on a global scale, the results of which were presented at the awards ceremony.

Students around the world reported being very satisfied with their study experience, with an average reported student satisfaction rate of 4.21 on a scale from 1 to 5. Master’s and PhD students reported higher levels of satisfaction than Bachelor’s and Short courses students. International students reported being more satisfied with their study experience than domestic students, as students often cross borders for education in order to access a better-quality education than the one provided in their home country.

Students also rated their experience high in terms of admission process (4.05), student-teacher interactions (4.00), quality of programme (3.99), student diversity (3.95), quality of student life (3.93), career development (3.93), level of difficulty (3.93), campus infrastructure (3.88), with a few points of improvement as well with regards to the cost of living (3.64) and scholarships and funding (3.55).
