EFMD Accreditation Systems for Management Education
Value of EQUIS and EPAS accreditations.
EQUIS – EFMD Quality Improvement System – was founded in 1997. It is now the leading international system for quality assessment, quality improvement and accreditation of business and management institutions/schools. It focuses on all the activities within a business school that aims to meet international standards of quality. EQUIS is designed to provide recognition and advice to whole institutions such as business schools and university faculties of business and management. It evaluates all the activities of the institution including degree programmes, research, e-learning units, executive education provision and also its approach to ethics, responsibility and sustainability. It also evaluates the quality of resources available such as the faculty and support staff, and the learning infrastructure provided for students such as teaching accommodation and IT/library support.
Its approach to quality assessment is rooted in respect for diversity of institutional and cultural contexts. EQUIS promotes no “one best model” for a business school and it does not expect standardisation of degree programmes, course content or delivery modes. Nevertheless, it does require an international dimension in most activities, a strong interface with the corporate world, and an ethos of promoting responsible management.
“EQUIS has set new standards of quality in management education. The EQUIS accreditation process is a unique opportunity for a university or a business school to reflect on the relevant strategic issues that any institutions face in today’s changing world, as well as on the operational dimensions that make the university’s educational experience truly great.”
Jordi Canals, Dean, IESE Business School
“EQUIS accreditation is one of the most important benchmarks available to business schools to ensure excellence in teaching, student experience, research and outreach. I am very pleased that our substantial effort to continually improve in all aspects of what we do has been well recognised.”
Jon Reast, Dean, Bradfort University School of Management
EPAS – EFMD Programme Accreditation System – was founded in 2005 and is designed as a quality enhancement process for particular programme within an institution. EPAS mission is the enhancement of student learning within business and management programmes. It achieves this by evaluating the quality of any business and/or management degree programme that has an international perspective and, where of an appropriately high quality, by accrediting it.
The EPAS standards ensure that programmes are designed and delivered so that they are both academically rigorous and have practical relevance. EPAS ensures that programmes are designed and delivered to broaden students’ minds, deepen their thinking, and enable them to carry out critical analyses within a profound knowledge of the theories and practice of business and management. Programme outcomes will not only include the knowledge acquired but also the ability to communicate ideas and analyses, and to motivate and manage other people.
“The EPAS process has had a great impact on multiple aspects of quality for our Bachelor’s Program in International Business Management. I would like to thank the evaluators for their deep insights. We value the feedback that we received in terms of a continued quality improvement process.”
Andreas Zaby, Deputy President, Berlin School of Economics and Law, Department of Business and Economics, Germany
“It is our students who really benefit from this accreditation through an international market recognition of our high quality business and management programmes. It gives Sheffield Business School greater potential for cross-border recognition by national quality agencies and other EPAS accredited institutions. The accreditation process particularly focuses on academic rigour, the quality of the student experience, the level of business engagement, the international dimension of the programme, and linkages with alumni and their career progression.”
Adrian Hopgood, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean, Sheffield Business School, Sheffield Hallam University
