The Global Study Awards: Expand Your Horizon with up to £10,000

Starting August 2015, we are launching the Global Study Awards together with the ISIC Association and British Council IELTS, which offers students the chance to receive up to £10,000 to expand their horizon and study abroad. We want to ultimately encourage young people to study abroad as part of their tertiary studies in order to experience and explore new countries, cultures and languages. The Global Study Awards recognises studying abroad as a positively life changing experience for many students, opening their minds to alternative ways of personal life and professional career, as well as promoting intercultural understanding and tolerance. The Global Study Awards is replacing our previous scholarship, and offers students the chance to receive a higher funding for their studies.

The StudyPortals Scholarship

August 2015 marked the final round of the €1,000 StudyPortals Scholarship, which we launched in 2007 to help students cover the costs of studying abroad. The final beneficiary will be announced in September 2015. Below you can find a list of the previous beneficiaries of the scholarship and their stories.

The Eighth StudyPortals Scholarship Beneficiary - Daniella Laplanteová

The Eighth StudyPortals Scholarship Beneficiary - Daniella Laplanteová

Daniella is currently majoring in Biomedical Sciences at Northern Arizona University in the USA, while her minor is in Modern Languages (focus on Spanish).

“I have always been interested in foreign cultures and the lives of people in different parts of the world, and globalization is making it even more important to understand and accept people from different cultures. It is for this reason that I chose the take the hard road, and change my life by studying abroad. Along the way from first completing my application, to preparing to depart, and getting used to a new place and culture, I have faced many challenges. I have not only discovered that I have the strength to deal with new situations, but also that my family, friends, and professional contacts have been invaluable in helping me along my journey. I would like to thank all of them as well as StudyPortals for believing in me and my dream to learn about the world and make it a better place.”

“My interest in studying at Northern Arizona University was sparked by the presence of the Center for Microbial Genetics and Genomics at the campus. It is a research facility that investigates disease outbreaks, performs genetic research, and studies disease vectors, such as mosquitoes and ticks. In my teenage years, I underwent physical and psychological trauma caused by Lyme disease. This experience guided me on a journey of medical research to save other’s lives and improve public health.”

“I am dedicated to my goal to serve others and develop a career that supports social justice while providing access to medical care for all people in need. StudyPortals is allowing me to focus on my class material more completely as well as learn more about the people and cultures around me, both of which will ultimately make me a better physician when I graduate; for that I have immense gratitude.”

The Seventh StudyPortals Scholarship Beneficiary - Toni Franken

Toni is currently wrapping up her BSc. in Animal and Veterinary Science, at Clemson University in South Carolina and will continue her studies in Scotland, starting with fall 2015.

“My dream for almost as long as I can remember has been to become a veterinarian. Until the last two years, when I discovered the University of Glasgow, Scotland, I hadn’t really thought about going abroad for my veterinary studies. Yet, as soon as I listened to a speaker for the University, I knew that it was an opportunity that I couldn’t ignore! Since that moment, going abroad is something that has driven me to reach further than I ever thought I could, and pushed me to explore what is out there. Getting my degree from the University of Glasgow would mean that I would be able to practice veterinary medicine anywhere in the world, and would offer me the priceless opportunity to explore places outside of the United States. I feel that this will make me a more well-rounded, educated individual with a broader idea of what it means to be a veterinarian and member of society on a global scale, not simply a national one.”

“This year, I had the chance to ap
ply to the University of Glasgow a year early, and to my immense delight, I was accepted to begin schooling there in the fall of 2015! While this opportunity was incredibly exciting, one of the largest things standing in my way has been funding. Already, as an out of state student in undergraduate school, I’ve spent and borrowed so much, and going overseas is further pushing the boundaries of what is financially feasible for myself and my family. To compensate, I’ve begun to apply to scholarships, grants, various jobs, and other opportunities, in hopes that this burden will be somewhat lifted, and I’m so grateful to Study Portals for being a part of this learning process for me! With the help of this scholarship to pay for my tuition, I’m proving to myself that it is possible to achieve your goals, even when difficult obstacles stand in your way.”

“You just have to put in the effort, and you can make your dreams a reality. I’m grateful in every way for this opportunity, my friends and family supporting me, and for the adventure that going abroad is sure to bring.”

The Sixth StudyPortals Scholarship Beneficiary - Reinaldo Wiener

The Sixth StudyPortals Scholarship Beneficiary - Reinaldo Wiener

Reinaldo has recently started the M.Sc. in Numerical Methods in Engineering, offered by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC).

“Since I was studying my undergraduate studies, I have developed a great interest in knowing other countries, other cultures and, especially, to continue studying. After graduating, I planned to start a master abroad, because I considered that it would help me to improve my knowledge beyond what my country had to offer. So I started to work because I didn’t have the money to afford the study, yet I always imagined myself sharing with foreign partners, learning things in a good university.

Unfortunately, in the last 10 years the economic situation in Venezuela has been going down, scholarships are too competitive and the offer is reduced. My savings were consumed by the high inflation rate and my salary was not raised. […]

Thanks to the SP scholarship I can see now the light at the end of the tunnel. This money not only represents their value, but also represents hope. It represents that no matter how difficult the things could seem, sometimes when you least expect, good things happens. Thanks to SP Scholarship I will be able to continue my studies and build my future as a professional.”

The Fifth StudyPortals Scholarship Beneficiary - Valeriia Iegorova

Valeriia has just started the Master’s programme in Luxury Goods Management – EMLUX, offered by the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC).

“The idea of studying abroad was always on my mind since I was 17 years old. Frankly speaking (I don’t know whether it is good or not), but I am a terrible perfectionist, especially when it comes to my self-development and skills improvement – I see that there are so many things that I don’t know, so many cultures I want to explore, so many people I would like to share the experience with. And the thing that could provide me with all these unique opportunities was studying abroad. I chose 4 universities where I wanted to study, and one of them – Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore – gave me the scholarship for obtaining the Master’s degree here in Milan.

I must confess that my way to studying abroad was not that easy, mainly from the psychological point of view: at first I didn’t even believe that it would be possible to get the scholarship because so many talented and clever students were applying to the programmes I had chosen for myself. And, to be honest, I almost gave up this idea – I was not sure enough that it would have a positive outcome. I am so grateful to my parents, friends and teachers who inspired me and brought me back to life, to my dreams – thanks to these people (who are giving me great support even now) I made one of my dreams come true.”

The Fourth StudyPortals Scholarship Beneficiary - Antara Sharma

The Fourth StudyPortals Scholarship Beneficiary - Antara Sharma

Antara will be studying Polymer Science in a Master programme offered in a cooperation by Free University of Berlin, Humboldt University of Berlin, Technical University of Berlin and University of Potsdam.

“My decision to study abroad and particularly in Europe was taken because of my strong belief that while going for higher education one should not only aim for enriching the subject knowledge, but also it should be considered as an opportunity to study the culture, customs, and rituals of different societies. Europe’s fascinating old history of civilization and rich culture is a great starting point for me. However, studying in a foreign country is an expensive affair, particularly for people like me belonging to a middle class family. I have got a study loan from a bank, but the ‘Study Portals Study Abroad scholarship’ of 1,000 Euro is a wonderful gift and I feel much relieved now to start the things afresh in Berlin. I plan to use this money to purchase books and study materials. Also, I plan to spend a part of it to make a cultural trip in and around Berlin. I am thankful to Study Portal for jump-starting my dream to study in Berlin and boosting my morale.”

The Third StudyPortals Scholarship Beneficiary - Gregory Otieno

Gregory is currently studying Corporate Finance and Management at the University of Economics in Prague

“My choice to study abroad was motivated by the fact that I have always loved diversity and meeting and working with students from different cultures and backgrounds. During my high school studies in Kenya, my interest in studying abroad, especially in Europe, grew stronger and that led me to apply to several Universities across Europe. I had to prepare for entrance exams and finally I got acceptance letters from several Universities in Switzerland, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Norway and Czech Republic. My greatest challenge was funding my studies, especially coming from a poor family. I did not let circumstances to limit my dreams and so I tried to find financing but I did not succeed. I finally volunteered and worked with many non-profitable organizations and from there I got good contacts and made friends with volunteers from countries in Europe.

I got an invitation to visit Czech Republic from my volunteer friends and during my 3-week stay I managed to visit their Universities, at the same time I started learning Czech language. When I went back to Kenya, I had made up my mind that I wanted to study in Czech Republic. I applied for and managed to secure a Czech government scholarship to study Czech language for a year. During this year at language school, I took the entrance exams at the University of Economics in Prague and got accepted. The challenge remained the same, funding my study after my Czech language scholarship was over. So I decided to save most of my money and I registered with Czech film agencies in Prague that provide film extras to the movies and commercials that are shot in Prague. I saved all the revenue from a few commercials that I participated in and paid the tuition fee at the University. I also relied on contributions from relatives and well wishers to pay for my health insurance and visa requirement.

Now that I have been awarded the StudyPortals Study Abroad Scholarship, I feel relieved and I plan to channel all the money to pay for tuition fee for my second year of study. I am so excited and grateful to Studyportal for their Study Abroad Scholarship and words cannot express how I feel.”

Right now, I am in Delft, which never fails to amaze me with its rich culture and quality education. It’s an overwhelming feeling which will stay with me for a lifetime.

Overall, the money will help me greatly during my master thesis as I might have to travel to Norway regarding my topic. This money will not only directly contribute towards my thesis, but will allow me to achieve my goals with more ease.”
